As you know, we lost our only Sanctuary horse, Maverick, in January. He was 41 years old and had been with us since 2016.
D-S Rescue doesn't take in sanctuary horses, and our goal is always to find the perfect forever home for any horse no matter their age, as long as they are healthy.
When Maverick first came to D-S Rescue, he was obviously not healthy. He was several hundred pounds under weight and was in his 30s already. We figured out pretty quickly that he was going blind but still had some, but not much, vision.
Once he was healthy and gained his weight back, it was time to find him his forever home. He was rideable and even went with Deanna on a few trails in the National Park. However, with his sight issues and his age, his forever adoptor never came. Year after year, his health remained, but his sight worsened, and he aged.
Once we realized his sight was mostly gone, we knew it wouldn't be fair to him to make him adapt to a new environment, new family, and new owners.
So he became our first, last, and only sanctuary horse. Even up into his 40s, he loved pony rides for Deannas's grandkids. He loved attention, grooming, and his equine friends. He even loved the sheep!! He never gave up. He never got depressed, and he loved life up to the very last day. He was a staple at D-S Rescue, almost a self-proclaimed mascot, as he loved to greet everyone who came to say hi.
We weren't ready to lose him, but we know he will be waiting for us at the rainbow bridge.
We will all hold a special place in our hearts for such an amazing horse.
